Which eBook Format Should You Use, Adobe PDF or EXE?

Printer-Friendly Format

As information product developers, a large part of our business is packaging written products such as ebooks, special reports, newsletters, interview transcripts, checklists or courses delivered in digital format.

When you want to distribute your product from your ownwebsite, Amazon.com, eBay or other shopping or e-commerce sites, then you need to offer your product in a digital format.

To package your information product you have a couple of choices, Adobe PDF format or use an eBook compiler to turn your ebook content into a software program delivered with a reader all in one executable file.

If you are confused over which method to use, then these tips will help you.

ADOBE PDF Format

By far Adobe PDF is the accepted standard for delivering digital information products.

There are some advantages to using Adobe's format:

1. Almost 100% of computer users have the Adobe reader installed as part of their operating system when they purchase their computer. For you, that means that everyone is going to be able to read your ebook in PDF format with little or no support cost or trouble to you.

2. Adobe PDF offers some good security settings for restricting modification, copying and printing of your material. Granted, some of the exe ebook compilers are good as well, Adobe does have some good features here.

3. Adobe's compiler - the function that you purchase to turn regular documents such as Microsoft Word into PDF works very well and preserves your links

The steps involved in creating your ebook in Adobe PDF format are:

1. Create ebook in word processor - I prefer MS Word. Include your any links, graphics and pictures in your MS Word document

2. Decide on an Adobe PDF Compiler - here are 3 choices that all work at different price points:

a) PowerPDF - Convert any file from Windows application to PDF - $49 http://www.highertrustmarketing.com/part/pdfpro/
b) Adobe Acrobat no-charge 5 conversions online
https://createpdf.adobe.com/
c) Adobe Acrobat full version - most flexible, but rather pricey at approx. $299 - 30-day trial

3. With Power PDF or the full version of Adobe Standard, you will find a simple button on your Windows applications to convert data to PDF. With the Adobe Acrobat Service, you simply sign up for trial and give them the location of your Windows application file and they will email you back a PDF version in a few hours.

As you can see, compiling your ebook, report, newsletter, or other infoproduct into PDF format is both simple and has many advantages.

OTHER EBOOK COMPILERS

There are many other ebook compilers on the market that basically all work by importing a full set of html content and compile it into an ebook format.

Here are a few advantages of the Executable ebook format:

1. You often have additional security features such as requiring a license serial number that only you receive as part of your download.

2. The look and feel is much more like a website than a traditional published book. For some types of products that require heavy navigation or perhaps mixed links back to your website, the exe format could be appealing

3. Rebranding options built in. With PDF, you only have a few options for rebranding - with most exe ebook compilers, they come with built-in or add-on rebrand capabilities. This is especially useful for viral ebooks that you want to give away to partners who can rebrand for their own affiliate links and identity.

The downside of exe ebooks are that they are often heavily dependent on the underlying operating system which may cause significant support issues, they often do not go over well with people expecting traditional book "look and feel" and they may not work on systems such as MAC's, Linux and earlier versions of Windows.

So as you can see, you have two main options for compiling your digital information products - both with advantages and disadvantages.

With this information, the decision should be much easier and quicker so you can focus more time and energy on developing your content.
